Tuesday 5th June 2018 - Richard Knight Cup Final

Harding 2-1 VEC (aet)

Unfortunately it was not to be for VEC on the night!

It was a very tight game played in the FAI in Abbotstown that was a tough battle and finely balanced the whole way through.  Harding went in front after 33 minutes when a cross was whipped into the box and was unluckily turned it into his own net from defender Peter O’Brien under pressure from an opposing player.

Then in the 70th minute, a diagonal ball to the back post was taken on the chest by Joey Byrne: he was bundled over before getting his shot away for a penalty which Anto Dunne stuck sweetly into the top corner to make it 1-1.  With no further goals in the 90 minutes, the game went to extra time.

On the stroke of the 11th minute of the first period of extra time, the Harding striker hit a speculative shot from about 30 yards out.  Goalkeeper Alan Keane touched it onto the cross bar, but it crossed the line having hit his back. In the second period of extra time VEC pushed forward and Harding sat back soaking up the pressure and playing on the counter: but the equalising goal that VEC needed to bring the game to penalties never really looked like coming at that stage.

It was hard on the players to lose to two own goals but that's football.  Congratulations to Harding on their win.
